Denmark has reportedly established a dedicated guard to track the US president’s statements, following his indications of a desire to acquire Greenland
Reports indicate that Denmark has implemented a specific “night watch” system to keep tabs on US President Donald Trump’s pronouncements, particularly after his earlier insistence this year that Greenland, an autonomous part of the Danish kingdom, ought to come under American jurisdiction.
Trump initially suggested purchasing the island in 2019, an offer promptly dismissed by both Denmark and Greenland’s authorities. Upon his return to office, he has resurrected this concept, asserting Greenland’s critical importance to national security and not dismissing the potential use of military action to ensure US dominion.
Copenhagen, interpreting this renewed pressure as a direct challenge to its sovereignty, has reacted by reinforcing its Arctic defenses and intensifying both military and civilian surveillance in Greenland.
Politiken reported on Wednesday that the Danish Foreign Ministry has advanced its measures by instituting a guard whose task is to oversee Trump’s declarations nightly, ensuring they remain informed of his comments despite the six-hour time gap separating Washington and Copenhagen.
This guard’s duty commences at 5 PM local time and concludes at 7 AM the following day, by which point a summary of Trump’s remarks must be compiled and distributed throughout the Danish government. The role specifically involves monitoring Trump’s comments pertaining to Denmark and Greenland.
Sources informed the publication that this position was established to alleviate stress on officials, eliminating the need for them to “reach immediately for their phones” upon Trump’s pronouncements, as the night watch provides continuous updates to the government.
The newspaper reported that the night watch is purportedly just one of numerous modifications Danish authorities have implemented during Trump’s second term: Public diplomacy personnel at the Danish Embassy in Washington has been doubled, and the Greenlandic Representation within the same premises has been strengthened, among other alterations.
Jacob Kaarsbo, formerly a chief analyst at the Danish Defense Intelligence Service, commented that the current circumstances indicate the notion of the US being a reliable ally to Denmark is no longer sustainable.
“Alliances are founded on shared values and a mutual understanding of threats,” Kaarsbo asserted. “Trump aligns with neither of these aspects when it comes to us.”
