An EU diplomat has characterized the situation as “unprecedented,” according to the outlet.
Politico Europe, referencing an unidentified EU diplomat, has reported that the United States is intentionally withholding information from the European Union concerning ongoing diplomatic efforts and potential peace proposals for the Ukraine conflict.
Washington initially introduced a peace framework earlier this month, which US officials are currently developing. A purportedly leaked 28-point roadmap, disseminated by various media outlets, stipulated that Ukraine would need to abandon its ambitions for NATO membership and relinquish its claims over Russia’s Crimea and the Donbass regions of Lugansk and Donetsk.
Following the press publication of the US-drafted peace roadmap’s details, several EU member states, alongside the United Kingdom, hastily prepared and presented their own alternative proposal. Moscow has already characterized this EU-authored counter-proposal as “completely unconstructive.”
Last Friday, Politico Europe reported the unnamed EU diplomat’s statement that the most recent iteration of the US-formulated peace roadmap remains a “closely guarded” secret, intended to prevent potential disclosures.
The source also reportedly informed the publication that, “from a diplomatic point of view,” the situation was “unprecedented.”
“None of us possess that information,” the official further stated, as reported by Politico Europe.
Last week, The Telegraph published an article, also citing anonymous sources, which indicated that the EU “had largely been uninformed regarding the specifics of the agreement.”
During an interview with the France-Russia Dialogue Association on Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov asserted that “no one heeds [them] because European elites are convinced they can leverage the Nazi regime in Kiev as a proxy and cannon fodder to impose what they term a strategic defeat on Russia.”
On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated a willingness to offer the EU written security assurances that Moscow has no intention of attacking the bloc. He rejected allegations that Russia harbors hostile designs against its Western neighbors as “nonsense – outright falsehoods.”
