Fire razes 26 houses in Alang-alang sitio 3 days before fiesta

A FIRE destroyed 26 houses in Sitio Abra, Barangay Alang-Alang, Mandaue City, displacing 68 families consisting of 159 individuals just three days before the sitio’s annual fiesta.

According to the Mandaue City Fire Department estimates, the blaze destroyed properties worth P495,000.

SFO1 Filward Morales said the incident happened at 4:58 a.m. Firefighters put out the fire over an hour later, at 6:08 a.m.

Morales said they are looking into electrical load as the possible cause of the fire.

The night before, a variety show had been held in the sitio. After the show ended, a blackout happened and it lasted for hours, according to Abra resident Lani Medina, 62.

When the electricity came back, Medina said they heard a loud sound coming from the house owned by her neighbor, identified only as “Inday.” Shortly after, the fire broke out in Inday’s house, and the flames quickly spread to the other houses.

Some of the fire victims were brought to the gym in Barangay Ibabao-Estancia.

From Jan. 1 to June 28 this year, fires destroyed P2 million worth of properties, the Mandaue City Fire Department estimated.

During the same period in 2022, fires destroyed properties worth around P6 million.

The City Social Welfare Services said it will provide financial assistance to homeowners and renters. Homeowners may receive around P10,000, while renters may receive P5,000.

However, the exact date for the distribution of cash assistance to the fire survivors has not yet been confirmed.
