Japanese Destroyer Transits Taiwan Strait for First Time, Reports Say

A Japanese destroyer sailed through the Taiwan Strait on Wednesday for the first time, according to a report in the Yomiuri newspaper, citing multiple government sources. The move is seen as a signal to China.

The SDF destroyer Sazanami entered the waters from the on Wednesday morning, spending over 10 hours sailing southward to complete the passage, the Japanese newspaper reported on Thursday.

The passage was conducted in coordination with naval ships from Australia and , the paper said.

An SDF official declined to comment on the report.
