Two individuals, including an 11-year-old girl, sustained injuries in a stabbing incident in London’s Leicester Square on Monday and were subsequently transported to a hospital.
In addition to the young girl, a 34-year-old woman was also a victim of the attack. Authorities have not disclosed the identities of either victim or confirmed if they are related. Law enforcement apprehended a man in connection with the assault, but details regarding his identity remain undisclosed.
The victims are currently receiving medical care, but police have not provided an update on the severity of their injuries.
“Officers are at the scene of a stabbing in Leicester Square. A man has been arrested and is in custody,” the Metropolitan Police stated in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).
“We don’t believe there are any outstanding suspects. Two victims, an 11-year-old girl and a 34-year-old woman, have been taken to hospital and we await an update on their condition,” the statement continued.
Police added that paramedics provided initial medical assistance to the two women at the scene before transferring them to a major trauma center.
This attack follows a separate stabbing incident less than two weeks ago where a 17-year-old individual carried out a stabbing spree at a dance class for young children in the United Kingdom.
Three children tragically lost their lives in that attack, while five other children and two adults sustained critical injuries.
Axel Rudakubana, the perpetrator of the previous attack, has been formally charged. Born in Wales to Rwandan parents, he was seen smiling during his initial court appearance after the attack.
Rudakubana faces charges of murder for the deaths of Bebe King (6), Elsie Dot Stancombe (7), and Alice Dasilva Aguiar (9), and 10 counts of attempted murder for stabbing eight other children alongside two adults who intervened to help.
In the aftermath of the dance class attack, one individual, identified only as “she,” expressed her profound shock and ongoing processing of “the horror” of the incident.
“These were just little kids at a dance class,” she wrote in an Instagram story. “I am at a complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to these families.”
