P92-M flood protection for coconut plantations, farms in Baler, Aurora completed

A P91.68-million flood protection structure for coconut plantations and other farmlands in Baler, Aurora had been completed, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

In a statement on Tuesday, DPWH said the structure stretches 746 meters along the Malupa-Dian-Aguang River. The five-meter-high river wall serves as protection from water overflow during heavy rains.

The river control structure now helps in keeping the river from overflowing in times of heavy rains and provides better protection to coconut plantations as well as other farmlands located near the river, the department said.

Aside from minimizing agricultural losses, the structure also ensures safety of residents and lessens possible damage to properties brought about by river flooding,it added.

District Engineer Roderick A. Andal said the structure also has an access ramp that can be used by farmers.

Aurora province has over 33,473 hectares of land used for agriculture, including almost 7,280 hectares planted to coconut, based on the provinces website.

The project was built using funding allocated under this years national budget. MSJ
