Six Dead in Explosion at Mexican Tequila Distillery

Rescue teams discovered an additional body on Wednesday at a tequila distillery in Mexico, bringing the total number of fatalities to six. Two employees sustained injuries.

The factory is owned by Jose Cuervo, a renowned tequila brand in Mexico.

The local civil defense reported that the latest body was located in a waste area where large containers had collapsed.

The company stated on Tuesday that the explosion occurred during maintenance work. Authorities reported that the situation was under control on Tuesday evening, but a fire ignited in a storage area containing cardboard and other materials on Wednesday morning.

The town of Tequila is situated approximately 375 miles northwest of Mexico City. Overlooked by a volcano and surrounded by agave plantations, the plant used to produce tequila, life in the municipality of 40,000 residents centers around tequila production and the tourism it attracts.
