4 wounded roosters ‘rescued’; 17 men nabbed for ‘tigbakay’

FOUR roosters were on the brink of death on All Saints’ Day, Nov. 1, 2021, when the police in Talisay City, Cebu arrested the people who entertained themselves by letting them fight in “tigbakay.”

The fighting cocks were already wounded when the police found them.

The police arrested 17 men present in illegal cockfight events in two barangays in the city.

Talisay City Police Chief Lt. Col. Gerard Ace Pelare said there will always be people who engage in unlawful gambling activities during “kalag-kalag,” the Cebuano term for the observance of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, which is observed Tuesday, Nov. 2.

Before the arrest, the Talisay City Police Station patrol teams had scoured the barangays. When they reached Sitio Dikyam, Barangay Lawaan 1 and Sitio Ilang-ilang, Barangay San Isidro, they found the men engaged in “tigbakay.” The police immediately arrested them.

In Lawaan 1, police arrested Eugene Cañete, Bengey Barliso, Kim Jumawan, Rolly Badano, Wilfredo Abella, Roldan Echavez, Clint Jabirina, Lamberto Cañedo Jr., Randy Jarina, Edgar Tamayo, Melvin Abastillas and Jonathan Galvez.

Five men were caught in San Isidro. They were Glicerio Cuizon, Largo Mayormita, Jimmy Mauren, Reymond Asister and a barangay health worker of San Isidro who tried to bribe the arresting police officers.

All the arrested men are of legal age.

The police recovered a total of P1,850 in bet money from the two “tigbakay” events.

The arrested men will face complaints for violating Presidential Decree 1602, which sets the punishment for illegal gambling.

The police also found two other roosters. They were the unlucky ones—they were already dead. (KAL from BBT)
