41 arrested in Mandaue City during Holy Week

AROUND 41 people were arrested in Mandaue City for various crimes committed during the Holy Week, including 21 persons arrested for illegal drugs.

Despite the number of persons arrested during the Holy Week, Mandaue City Police Office (MCPO) Director Col. Jonathan Abella said the city was “generally peaceful.”

Maj. Mercy Villaro, MCPO spokesperson, said even with the Holy Week, their personnel still continued their crackdown against illegal drugs which resulted in the arrest of 21 persons during their checkpoint and buy-bust operations.

Aside from illegal drug peddlers and users, MCPO also apprehended eight quarantine violators during the Holy Week.

The eight violators were caught not wearing face masks and were apprehended on April 1 and April 2.

The eight were from Barangay Labogon (1), Barangay Tabok (4), Barangay Pagsabungan (1), and Barangay Looc (2).

Villaro said they also arrested 19 individuals for conducting illegal cockfighting and 12 individuals for conducting “hantak” or illegal gambling.

Better situation

Meanwhile, the MCPO said they noticed a few people at the Mandaue City Public Market during the Holy Week.

Abella said the situation at the city market was much “controlled” compared to last year.

Abella said they have deployed at most four police personnel at each market to ensure the enforcement of the quarantine protocols.

Personnel from the Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (Team), the Mandaue City Market Authority and from surrounding barangays also assisted the police in securing the market. (KFD)
