75 of 80 Cebu City brgys log active Covid-19 cases

SEVENTY-FIVE out of 80 barangays in Cebu City have had active coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) transmission for the past 10 days or from August 18 to August 27, 2021.

The Cebu City Emergency Operations Center (EOC) record shows that only five barangays in the city have not recorded any Covid-19 case for the past 10 days. These are Barangays Buot, Malubog, Pamutan, Tabunan, and Tagba-o.

Cebu City Councilor Joel Garganera, deputy chief implementer of the EOC, said the location of these barangays is one factor why there was no current Covid-19 transmission.

“They are not densely populated, a lot of fresh and open air,” said Garganera.

Garganera though said this is only for the last 10 days.

As of August 27, Cebu City has 3,383 active Covid-19 cases, according to EOC data.

Based on the data of the EOC, Barangay Guadalupe remains to have the most number of recorded cases in the past 10 days with 282.

However, while Guadalupe has the most number of recorded cases for the last 10 days, it placed 13th in the list of barangays with high infection rate per population with only 0.41 percent out of the 68,269 total population.

Barangay Santa Cruz has the highest infection rate with 1.39 percent out of the 1,582 total population.

Other barangays which have recorded the most Covid-19 cases from Aug. 18 to Aug. 27 are Tisa (140 cases); Talamban (138); Lahug (134); Punta Princesa (105); Labangon (96); Apas (96); Camputhaw (95); Mabolo (95); and Capitol Site (76).

Aside from Santa Cruz, the top 10 barangays with high infection are Barangays Parian with 0.85 percent out of 1,755 population; Zapatera with 0.71 percent out of the 3,507 population; Capitol Site with 0.60 percent out of the 12,695 population; and Cogon Ramos with 0.56 percent out of the 3,222 population.

The total Covid-19 cases in the city have reached 37,312 with 32,719 recoveries and 1,210 deaths.

For the month of August, the EOC recorded 244 deaths.

Garganera said the mortalities due and related to Covid-19 within the month are “devastating.”

He said this is not the time for the public to be complacent since the Covid-19 cases reported daily in the city are still in the triple digits. (JJL)
