A broken heart, a booming business: Street food brand expands to more cities

By Cristina Grace T. Morgia, USC Intern

FOR most, a heartbreak is one of the worst pains they can experience, but for 8Flix and Chill’s owner and founder, Veronica Castilllo, having her heart broken was the best thing to happen in her life.

Veronica was down bad. Left with no money after her first heartbreak, she needed to find a way to get back up. Instead of working, she borrowed some money to launch 8Flix and Chill on Nov. 18, 2019. From its humble beginnings offering tuslob buwa in a small hut in Talisay, 8Flix and Chill has now grown into a well-loved Cebuano brand.

Three years after its launch, 8Flix and Chill opened its third and biggest branch by far on Oct. 8, 2022, in front of Tamiya Terminal, Pueblo Verde, Lapu-Lapu City.

8Flix and Chill’s latest expansion now brings itss signature unlimited tuslob buwa closer to both Lapu-Lapu locals and visitors alike — celebrities are often spotted at 8Flix, enjoying the unique street food that Cebu has to offer.

Two people can get an unlimited tuslob buwa set for only P220. The menu also includes street food favorites such as dynamite, ngohiong, ginabot, siomai and crab meat. With this new expansion, Veronica plans on adding sizzling dishes to the menu, but with a brainy twist that stays true to the 8Flix brand.

What makes this new branch even more special is its live events, where diners can enjoy local bands during its tribal, reggae and rock nights. With the extra space in their biggest branch, Veronica decided to hold activities to make sure people have more reason to come back and enjoy not only the food, but the entire experience.

There’s no reason not to visit, as 8Flix and Chill’s Lapu-Lapu City branch is open daily from 11 a.m. to 12 a.m., extending to 3 a.m. on weekends. “I don’t want to miss a day of operations,” Veronica shared, as she wants to make sure all Oponganons have the chance to eat, drink and chill all-night long.

8Flix and Chill has two other branches located in Talisay and Cebu City, with an expansion to Mandaue City as their next target. In the future, Veronica hopes to open a branch in Manila and bring this Cebuano delicacy to the country’s capital.

Not everyone will be as lucky as Veronica after a heartbreak, but hard times can always be healed with good food and great company at 8Flix and Chill.
