A safe summer: 5 pandemic vacation tips

If the intense heat, albeit the occasional showers, is any indication, summer is finally here!

While we did not expect to still be under quarantine after more than a year, we adapt and life goes on—summer included. There are still government guidelines in place and safety protocols to follow, but we can still have some summer fun.

For a fun yet safe vacation season, here are some tips you might find useful:

Don’t forget your pets

If you plan on bringing your fur babies with you, always confirm with your accommodation if they allow pets to avoid inconvenience. Since it’s extra hot this time of the year, make sure they are well-hydrated and are not exposed to the sun for too long, especially if you’re out and about. If they are to be left home, leave them under

the supervision of a friend or neighbor.

Book an entire property

Obviously, this option is on the pricey side. But if you’re a big group, whether family or friends, this might be a reasonable and safer alternative. If you manage to score a good deal, you might even get more value for your money. There are plenty of beach houses in Mactan or hillside homes with pools up in Busay. Should you prefer heading up north or down south to the countryside, you’ll have a lot of options as well.

Avoid crowded spots

You’re probably not the only ones planning a summer getaway, and knowing how small Cebu can be, chances are where you’re going is where other people are going too. As much as you can, go on weekdays. Wait ‘til the kids are on their summer break and take a leave from work, if possible. If weekends are your only option, go to properties that strictly monitor their capacity. Wide open areas are a plus.

Be a compliant guest

Most hotels and resorts already have strict protocols in place to make sure guests have a safe and enjoyable stay, so you should do your part as well. If you’re checked in at a resort or hotel, although you’re in vacation mode, don’t forget to follow standard protocol especially if you’re in public areas: Wear your mask, observe social distancing and sanitize frequently.

Travel locally and responsibly

If you really want to get off the island, go domestic. Siargao seems like the go-to summer destination as of late, but there are equally great options like Bohol. Just make sure to research travel requirements beforehand. These can include a swab test and other documents like flight and booking confirmation. Of course, when you’re already at your destination, don’t forget to observe safety protocols—keep that mask on, please!
