Abne beats Ligas by split decision to win OPBF Silver belt

UNBEATEN April Jay Abne proved that he’s one of the Filipino flyweights to look forward to in the future after winning the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) Silver flyweight belt with a split decision over Bienvenido Ligas in the main event of ARQ Boxing’s “Engkwentro Dos” last Oct. 30, 2021, at the Ibabao-Estancia Gym in Mandaue City.

April did just enough to squeak past Ligas, one of his stiffest tests to date. Judges William Manos and Edgar Olalo scored it 96-94 in favor of the 22-year-old Abne, while judge Arnel Pasion saw it the other way around with a 96-94 score for Ligas.

Abne should break into the World Boxing Council (WBC) flyweight rankings after winning the OPBF Silver flyweight belt. He remained undefeated with a 7-0 record with three knockouts, while Ligas suffered just his second career defeat and dropped to 13-2-2 with nine knockouts.

Meanwhile, Abne’s brother Ian Abne (3-0, 2 KOs) walked away with a close unanimous decision over Cristopher Caburog (2-1). The scores were 59-55, 58-56 and 58-56.

BJ Wild (6-0, 5 KOs), on the other hand, stayed undefeated with a fourth round stoppage of Rimon Rama (6-4-1, 4 KOs) in one of the featured fights. (EKA)
