Araneta headlines Kumbati 15 vs. Majungoen

WORLD-RATED light flyweight Christian Araneta makes his ring return after a long layoff and takes on Thai veteran Jakrawut Majungoen in the main event of the Omega Sports Promotions’ Kumbati 15 – “Battle of Mactan” on April 1, 2023 at the Hoops Dome in Lapu-Lapu City.

Araneta hasn’t fought in nine months since a unanimous decision win over the late Toto Landero in Mandaue City.

Araneta will be in a must-win fight against Majungoen, a former regional titleholder.

Araneta hopes to push for a world title shot and a win over a solid opponent in Majungoen should help him move up the ladder.

He’s currently ranked No. 5 by the International Boxing Federation (IBF), No. 9 by the World Boxing Organization (WBO), No. 11 by the World Boxing Association and No. 17 World Boxing Council.

Araneta hasn’t had much success in the big stage. He lost to Daniel Valladares, the current IBF minimumweight champion, in an IBF light flyweight title eliminator in 2019 in Mexico. He didn’t come out for the fifth round after suffering a shoulder injury.

Araneta earned another IBF light flyweight title eliminator in 2021 against current Sivenathi Nontshinga in South Africa. He lost to Sivenathi, now the IBF light flyweight chanpion, by unanimous decision.

Since his loss to Nontshinga, Araneta won three straight against Richard Claveras, Arnold Garde and Landero.

Majungoen, on the other hand, is coming off a unanimous decision defeat in the Olimjon Nazarov last Jan. 28 in a WBO Oriental flyweight title fight.

The 27-year-old Majungoen has fought the likes of former world champion Daigo Higa, former world title challenger Wittawas Basapean and world-rated Tanes Ongjunta.

Araneta is 22-2 with 17 knockouts, while Majungoen is 42-3-2 with 21 knockouts. (EKA)
