Azkals’ Schröck retires from int’l competition

STEPHAN Schröck officially retired from international competition on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023, after the Philippines Azkals’ last match in Asean Football Federation Mitsubishi Electric Cup at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.

The 36-year-old Schröck donned the national colors one last time in a 2-1 loss to Indonesia.

“It was an honor and a pleasure to represent our country for 11 years. I wore my father’s last name but played with my mother’s heart. In the end, all I can say is: From the bottom of my heart — thank you all,” Schröck posted on his official Facebook account last Tuesday.

Schröck, born to German father and Filipino mother, represented Germany in the youth level but switched alliances to the Philippines in the men’s level.

He made his debut for the Philippines on June 29, 2011 in a 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifiers first-round match against Sri Lanka. He scored his first international goal in a 2-1 defeat to Kuwait.

Schröck finished with 57 caps for the Azkals and suited up most notably in the 2014 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Challenge Cup, 2019 AFC Asian Cup, 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and 2021 SEA Games.
