Carbon market vendors get reprieve

THE Cebu City Government and the contractor of the Carbon Market Modernization Project will allow vendors occupying the old Carbon Market Unit 2 to continue displaying their goods in their old stalls in Warwick Barracks and Freedom Park without additional charge while the area is not being developed yet.Market Administrator Raquel Bohol-Arce said on Wednesday, March 2, 2022, that only 10 percent of the 700 stalls in the interim market, which is the old Unit 2 market, are occupied at present since most of the vendors in Warwick and Freedom Park refused to relocate.Arce said vendors at the interim market, who are charged P8 per square meter of vending space per day, will still be allowed to sell at their old stalls without paying additional rent.Arce said during her meeting with the vendors, the latter respected the decision of Megawide Construction Corporation and the Cebu City Government to develop the Warwick Barracks and Freedom Park and that they would remain in the area while the project has not started yet.The new public market, when fully operational, is expected to generate around P50 to P70 million in taxes every year, which is more than the P20 million tax the City Government is currently collecting from market vendors.Arce also suggested that City Hall department heads and barangay officials conduct a market tour to see for themselves the convenience of shopping at the interim market. She also encouraged barangay tanods in the area to buy from vendors at the interim market after receiving their honorarium to help the vendors increase their sales.
