Carbon vendors stay put

CARBON market vendors have reiterated that they will not leave the area at Freedom Park and Warwick Barracks for the interim market amid a possible threat of demolition from the Cebu City Government.Carbohanong Alyansa Chairman Antonio Remedio said they will stay in their regular stalls as vendors who were against the transfer to the interim market were never informed of a meeting conducted earlier.Remedio said the joint venture agreement (JVA) entered into by the City Government and Megawide Construction Corp. for the redevelopment of Carbon Market had loopholes even though Cebu City Market Administrator Raquel Arce told them the City Government knows what’s best for vendors. For her part, Arce told SunStar Cebu that the Carbon Market vendors were misinformed about a demolition.Arce said the Market Authority Office did not issue a demolition notice to the Carbon vendors but only a notice for them to vacate. The vendors were given up to Friday, March 18, 2022 to leave Freedom Park and Warwick Barracks to move into the interim market on the second floor.Roland Laguna, one of the affected vendors, complained that the interim market had such a small space.Aside from that, the area has no electricity because the Visayan Electric would not allow them to connect to a power line without a building permit, Laguna said.He said they had been fighting over this issue for about a year.Meanwhile, Annabelle Alindahaw, a flower vendor, said they will not leave their stalls at Freedom Park until a public hearing is held.Arce warned that if the vendors won’t use the stalls at the interim market prepared for them, she will just give the space to others.
