Carvajal: Day of infamy

There are ominous signs a day of infamy is afoot in the Philippines. But unlike the US that suffered from the infamy of a foreign country, the Philippines might suffer from the infamy of its own people.Unless something jars us back to our senses, the day we elect Bongbong Marcos (BBM) President would be the day we show a shocked world who we really are, an intellectually dense people that elect as president someone who revises ugly historical truth to serve his family’s grandiose schemes of self-glorification.On that day of our infamy we reward a plundering family with the opportunity to plunder some more, our shameful way of telling the world we are a people that have no sense of truth and justice. A nation, therefore, that is without self-esteem, in short, without a soul.It is no surprise that traditional politicians are taking shelter in BBM’s camp. Their kind is known to burn moral integrity like incense on the altar of greed and ambition. What stumps this writer is how so many Filipinos seem to get so sold to BBM as to forget, or be ignorant about, the crimes of the Marcos family (not just the father’s) against the Filipino people. Some claim that BBM should not be punished for the sins of his father. But all we are saying is he should not be president. Since when is it a punishment to deprive him of the presidency?Yes, it was the father who sinned against the people; but the whole family approved of those crimes and to this day enjoys their benefits. If BBM did not approve, why is he revising the historical truth of Martial Law and making it appear like it was the best thing to ever happen to this country?Others admit to BBM’s own crimes. But, and this confounds even more, what’s this about asking people to support his candidacy, in their words, “in the spirit of Christian compassion and forgiveness?”What distorted Christianity is it that asks us to forgive the unrepentant and reward him with the presidency? It is like asking us to be more God than God who punishes the unrepentant and rewards only those who repent and atone for their sins.Still others claim the crimes the Marcos family is accused of are fabricated. This is an egregious lie no person in his right mind would bother with a rebuttal.Arguably, the real reasons for BBM’s presidential run are to write finis to his historical revision, prevent the return of his family’s stolen people’s money, and steal some more. He has lied straight-faced before; he could easily be lying now about his move on the presidency. It only takes a monkey’s brain to figure that one out.We cannot stop May 9 from coming around. But we can stop it from becoming a day of infamy. May 9 should instead be the day we proudly face and tell the world Feb. 25, 1986 was no fluke and we are still the same self-respecting nation we were on that glorious day in Edsa.
