Cebu City execs to watch out for ‘binignit’ gatherings in Carbon

WITH the Holy Week just a few days away, Cebu City officials plan to deploy more personnel at the Carbon Public Market to prevent massive crowding there.Cebu City Market Administrator Raquel Arce told SunStar Cebu they will need more people to secure the market to prevent a repeat of what occurred in previous years when marketgoers flocked to the market to buy ingredients for “binignit,” a sweetened stew often served during Holy Week. The Holy Week starts on Palm Sunday, April 10, and ends on Easter Sunday, April 17.In the first phase of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, social distancing protocols were violated as people flocked to the Carbon Public Market to buy the ingredients needed for binignit.Arce said aside from deploying more personnel at the market, she also plans to scatter vendors selling ingredients for binignit in different areas in the market to prevent mass gatherings in one place.Meanwhile, personnel of the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CCDRRMO) will be on “red alert” status next week for the Holy Week.Lawyer Gerardo Carillo, CCDRRMO chairman, told reporters on Wednesday, April 6, 2022, that their office is ready to respond to any emergencies or accidents that may arise during the Lenten celebration.Carillo assured that all of their personnel will be available since no one is allowed to file a leave of absence for the duration of the Holy Week.
