Cebu City eyes to complete ‘asphalt storm’ by end of May

THE Cebu City Government’s rehabilitation of roads and thoroughfares may soon be completed by the end of May 2022.Councilor Jerry Guardo, chairman of the committee on infrastructure, told SunStar Cebu on Sunday, April 24, that the project dubbed “asphalt storm” will have a “full-blast implementation” starting this week.Guardo said only four teams are currently working on the P70 million asphalting project; however, the city government is eyeing to add two more teams to expedite the road works. As of now, the progress of road asphalting in the city has been at 20 percent, said Guardo. The councilor added that there is an urgent need to fast-track the implementation of the project since numerous accidents have already occurred due to uneven road surfaces.Guardo further said that the nonstop rain brought by the intermittent weather in the last few weeks has caused delays in their project. This week, Guardo said overlaying of asphalt will be implemented in Barangays Lahug, Mabolo, Kamputhaw, Sambag 1, Ermita, Zapatera, Carreta, T. Padilla and Talamban in the North District.South District Barangays such as Guadalupe, Labangon, Tisa, Mambaling, Pardo, Basak San Nicolas, Cogon Pardo, Inayawan, Buhisan, Kalunasan, Calamba and Bonbon will also be included in the road asphalting project this week, said Guardo.Guardo added that the public also has the option to send a message to his Facebook page if they want to request road asphalting in the area. The councilor also clarified that the project is not violative of the existing spending ban imposed by the Commission on Elections.According to Guardo, the road asphalting project is a maintenance work, which had been bidded out before the start of the Comelec’s election ban.The “asphalt storm” road repair project is part of Mayor Michael Rama’s “21-gun salute” impact project after he assumed as city mayor after the death of the late Mayor Edgardo Labella in November last year.
