Cebu City logs two deaths on Election Day

TWO fatalities were recorded during the conduct of the national and local elections in Cebu City on Monday, May 9, 2022.One of the casualties was an elderly man who died after casting his vote in Barangay Tinago Monday late afternoon.City Councilor Joel Garganera identified on Tuesday, May 10 the fatality as Amado Juera Ganzo, 75.Ganzo experienced dizziness after he cast his vote inside Tejero Elementary School, said Garganera, deputy chief implementer of the city’s Emergency Operations Center.The septuagenarian had been asked to take a rest but he suddenly collapsed. He was rushed to the hospital by an ambulance but he was declared dead on arrival upon reaching the Cebu City Medical Center.According to Garganera, Ganzo was known to be suffering from high blood pressure and was diabetic.Shooting incidentMeanwhile, Garganera said the village watchman who was shot by unknown assailants in Barangay Zapatera on Monday evening died in hospital on Tuesday, May 10.The tanod Brian Mabaga was shot multiple times while on guard duty outside the Zapatera Elementary School early Monday evening.Mabaga was rushed to the hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds. He remained conscious upon reaching the hospital.However, Mabaga did not survive the gunshot wounds and he died Tuesday afternoon, Garganera told reporters.Garganera clarified that the shooting incident was not election-related.Despite the shooting incident, Garganera said the overall conduct of the national and local elections in Cebu City had been safe and peaceful.The councilor also praised the voters for adhering to the basic health protocols such as wearing of masks and for being patient, braving the long lines just to cast their votes.
