Cebu DRRMO repairs, upgrades early warning system for rainy days

THE Cebu Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) has started the repair and upgrade of its Early Warning System (EWS) in preparation for possible flooding and landslides during the rainy season.PDRRMO spokesperson Wilson Ramos told SunStar Cebu that the province’s EWS devices are being upgraded and repaired, particularly those damaged during the onslaught of Typhoon Odette (Rai) in December last year.Ramos, however, could not yet identify all the landslide- and flood-prone areas, citing they are still conducting further assessment.“We are still assessing some areas because after Odette there were more areas that experienced soil movement and liquefaction,” he said in a mix of Cebuano and English.Ramos said they have been monitoring the province 24 hours a week and they are always prepared should there be heavy downpour in the coming days or months. The spokesperson said local government units have always been reminded to prepare themselves through their respective DRRMOs.“Training and other capability building for our responders are being conducted regularly by our DRRMOs,” Ramos said. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration officially declared the start of the rainy season in the country on May 18, 2022.The weather bureau said the dry season in the country began on April 10 and lasted for only a month.
