Comelec Cebu registers 300K-plus voters for 2022 elections

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) Cebu said a total of 334,504 Cebuano voters have registered from August 2019 to May 15, 2021 for the May 9, 2022 national elections.

Cebu Provincial Election Supervisor Lionel Marco Castillano said the majority of these registrants are from the cities of Cebu and Mandaue.

He said a total of 152,340 voters have registered from Aug. 1 to Sept. 30, 2019; 31,378, from Jan. 20, 2020 to March 9, 2020; 150,786, September 2020 to May 15 of this year.

The majority of the registrants are women with 174,178. Men stand at 160,326.

Castillano said the Comelec Cebu is still on target, and it has started with its satellite registrations in barangays that reported no Covid-19 cases in recent weeks.

Some of the municipalities in Cebu Province that have satellite registrations are Talisay City (Kishanta Subdivision Clubhouse in Barangay Lagtang, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 22 and Barangay Hall of Jaclupan, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 29); Paril Gym in Cebu City on May 15 and Kasambagan Gym in Cebu City on May 22 for the Cebu City First District; Bonbon Covered Court in Cebu City on May 22 and Sudlon I Sports Complex in Cebu City on May 29 for the Cebu City Second District.

Though he could not yet provide the actual figures, Castillano said there has been a minimal increase in the voter’s registration in connection with the May 9, 2022 national presidential elections.

“It has increased, but as of now, because of those deleted (names of voters) because of their failure to vote twice or their deaths, the increase is minimal,” he said in a text message.

Castillano said the total expected voters from Cebu for the 2022 national elections could reach to about three million if the Comelec did not deactivate the registration of a total of 322,777 voters who failed to vote in the past two consecutive elections.

The election official urged Cebuanos who have not yet registered to visit the Comelec office and have themselves registered because the registrations will end on Sept. 30, 2021. There will be no extension, he added.

Castillano said those interested may visit their local Comelec Facebook pages or their local Comelec offices for information on how to register. (WBS)
