Comelec urged to disqualify Minglanilla mayoral bet

ONE of Minglanilla’s mayoral candidates has urged the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to act on his petition to disqualify one of his rivals who almost had a similar name as his.Minglanilla mayoral candidate Francis Gerard “Jigger” Selma Cañedo said his disqualification case against Francisco “Jiger” Cabatuan Cañedo which he filed on Oct. 13, 2021 is still pending before Comelec.Comelec’s Second Division already ruled to disqualify Francisco on Dec. 16, 2021.Comelec, however, failed to issue a resolution on the matter 10 days after they ordered Francisco’s disqualification.Due to this, Francis filed a motion for reconsideration before Comelec on Jan. 4, 2022 to ask the state’s election commission to formalize Francisco’s disqualification. In a press conference on Monday, April 11, 2022, Francis lamented that it has been two months since he sent a letter to Comelec but the latter has yet to issue a resolution on the matter.Francis also found out that Francisco can no longer be located after he filed his certificate of candidacy last October. He was also not present during the peace covenant signing between local aspirants in the town last month.Francis believes that the move aims to confuse voters especially that his rival is placed first on the official ballot because of their similar sounding but varying spellings of their names.Francis, a businessman and an independent candidate for town mayor, is set to face not just Francisco but also lawyer and incumbent town councilor Rajiv Enad, a member of the administration bloc Alayon Party in the town; and incumbent vice mayor Loben Geonzon of the town’s opposition bloc.
