Commission to lay out plans for Cebu City’s waterfront recovery

THE Cebu City Waterfront Development Commission (CCWDC) is set to meet on Sept. 2, 2022, to lay out the plans for the recovery of the city’s waterfront as ordered by Mayor Michael Rama.Vice Mayor Raymond Garcia, the CCWDC chairman, said Sunday, Aug. 21 that the commission will have to consolidate all existing efforts of other government offices whose work intersects with Rama’s vision for the city’s coastline. On Friday, Aug. 19, Rama issued Executive Order 3, which directs the CCWDC to recover, restore, protect, preserve, develop and enhance the city’s waterfront. The initiative includes the clearing of all structures that impede the outflow of the waterway and illegal structures extending or constructed on non-buildable areas. The waterfront of the city is composed of its municipal waters and immediate vicinity, which is not less than two kilometers from the high-level watermark of the sea.According to Garcia, the Cebu City Environment and Natural Resources Office and the Cebu City Rivers Commission are already collating data on the status of the city’s rivers and their tributaries.Reports from the Coastline Management Board and the Coastal Management Task Force will also be gathered to give a glimpse of the situation in the city’s 16 coastal barangays. The waterfront development program aims to promote tourism by offering water sports activities and enhancing the port and passengers in coordination with the shipping industry.Being the chairman of the CCWDC, Garcia said he wants to set goals and measurable outputs by identifying strategies and creating an enforceable timetable for the program. The city’s waterfront extends from Barangay Mabolo in the north to Barangay Inayawan in the south.
