Consolacion to spend P1M to hire ‘decloggers’

THE Municipal Government of Consolacion in northern Cebu has allocated P1 million to be used as “cash for work” incentives for those involved in declogging flooded areas in the town.Danilo Capangpangan, Consolacion’s Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (LDRRMO) head, told SunStar Cebu on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, that the “cash for work” program will be useful now that the rainy season is expected to bring flooding in some areas in the town.Capangpangan said seven of the town’s 21 barangays are prone to flooding. These are Tugbongan, Nangka, Pitogo, Cansaga, Danglag, Garing and Casili.A portion of Laray Road in Barangay Tayud was also recently identified as a flood-prone area due to the reported rise in sea level.Capangpangan said they started implementing their “cash for work” program on June 16.Capangpangan said each of the seven barangays will choose 10 persons that the LDRRMO will hire for the program. The persons hired by the town will be tasked to clean the flood-prone areas in their barangays or help declog the town’s major rivers, particularly those located in Cansaga, Polog and Garing, for a least eight hours a day within 10 days.Capangpangan said the program aims to prevent or lessen the incidence of flooding in their town.Training workshopOn Tuesday, June 21, personnel from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Central Visayas (DENR 7), particularly the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), conducted a workshop on understanding the risk exposure map to Consolacion town employees.Julius Umali, a senior geologist working for the DENR-MGB 7, said the training is an information, education and communication campaign to understand Consolacion’s geohazard map, identifying areas that are prone to landslides and flooding; and come up with programs that can help in mitigating risk in those areas.
