Cordova floating cottages design competition eyed

CEBU Governor Gwendolyn Garcia will hold a design competition for floating cottages that will be built off the coast of Cordova town on Mactan Island.Garcia has formed a group that will look into the rehabilitation of Cordova waters, as the Province and Cordova Municipal Government prepare for the reopening of the town’s floating cottages to tourists.

“I’m going to form this group that will lay down the guidelines because we are going to launch a competition for the design and total masterplan of the 33 hectares of fixed and floating cottages that will now have an effective and functioning water and waste management treatment,” said Garcia on Monday, Dec. 5, 2022.

“This will be a competition ang design nga ang kadtong modaog, mao to atong i-implement para uniform, para (we will use the winning design so that the floating cottages are) very well designed and it will address the environmental issue,” she added.

In August this year, Garcia ordered the suspension of operations and demolition of floating cottages off Barangay Catarman and Poblacion in Cordova town due to the high level of fecal coliform found in its waters.

She also banned people from swimming in the area in September 2022, as the fecal coliform level could cause typhoid fever, hepatitis, dysentery and other diseases.

In the meantime, swimming has been allowed in coastal waters of other barangays in Cordova. (ANV / LMY)
