Danao City opens P11.4-M skate park

FOUR days before its 62nd Charter Anniversary, Danao City opened its P11.4-million skate park on Saturday, June 3, 2023, to promote skateboarding and an active lifestyle.

This is just one of many projects the City had in plan for its monthlong charter anniversary celebration that includes the groundbreaking for a youth center and renovation of the city plaza. It also plans to rebuild this year the public market that had burned down a year ago. The construction of the projects will spur employment in the city.

The Danao City Skate Park is located across the city police station and fire station. It is designed to meet international standards and cater to skaters of all levels.

In an announcement on social media, the local government of the city in northern Cebu said the park features ramps, rails, ledges and bowls that skaters can use to show their skills and creativity.

Cebu skateboarding champions Motic Panugalinog and Renz Gelig gave a demonstration during the opening ceremonies.

Mayor Thomas Mark “Mix” Durano said everyone can use the park for free. Danao is not the only city in Cebu to have a skate park.

Other parks

Last April, Talisay City in southern Cebu began construction on its first ever skate park and family park.

Talisay City Mayor Gerard Anthony “Samsam” Gullas Jr. eyes a yearend completion of the project, located beside Plaza Talisay inside the City Hall compound. It is estimated to cost between P60 million and P80 million.

Cebu City also revived plans to build a skate park, first conceived in 2018 following the Asian Games gold medal win of Barangay Lahug native Margielyn Didal, after Didal became the country’s first skateboarding Olympian in 2021. But so far, the plans have not panned out.

New market

Another piece of good news that Mayor Durano and Vice Mayor Ramon “Nito” Durano III announced on Saturday, June 3, was that a year after the city’s public market burned down on June 2, 2022, a perspective has been developed for a new public market that will rise on the old site, so that construction will soon begin on the new public market.

The vice mayor said the fire had affected not just Danao residents but also the neighboring islands and towns in the north that depended on the market for their consumption and business.

The fire in Barangay Poblacion caused P52.2 million worth of damage after at least 100 stalls burned down, SunStar Cebu reported earlier.

The town of Danao became a city through the passage of Republic Act 3028 on June 7, 1961 during the incumbency of Rep. Ramon “Mano Amon” Durano Sr. and his wife, Mayor Beatriz “Mana Ati” Duterte Durano.

The monthlong activities for the charter day celebration include the Sidlak Games that include badminton, volleyball, table tennis and chess to be played in various venues from June 1 to 27, opening of the skate park and groundbreaking of the P8.6-million city youth center last June 3, Garbo Awards and Recognition at the Danao City Civic Center as well as the unveiling of the marker and opening of Plaza Beatriz at the City Fountain Area on June 7, and a local and overseas job recruitment activity at the parking space near the post office on June 8-9 and June 22-23.

Plaza Beatriz first built in the 1960s has been renovated to incorporate modern lighting and sound, the City said.

There will also be the Climate Change and Environmental Summit at the Danao City Civic Center on June 20-21, Sidlak Sing and Dance Idol at the same venue on June 24, and the opening of the City Olympics (Palagsikay 2023) at the Cebu Technological University-Danao Campus on June 30.
