Demecillo faces Nakajima for WBO AsPac belt

SLUGGER Kenny Demecillo guns for the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia-Pacific super bantamweight belt against Japanese Kazuki Nakajima on Feb. 16 at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan.

Demecillo is looking to become a regional champion again in a dangerous fight in Japan.

Since returning from the Covid-19 pandemic, the 30-year-old Demecillo won back-to-back fights against Eric Pulgo and Macrea Gandionco, who he both stopped.

Demecillo has an fan-friendly never-say-die brawling style that earned him his “Big Heart” moniker.

Demecillo rose up to prominence after winning the World Boxing Association (WBA) Oceania bantamweight belt with a second round stoppage of former amateur standout Daryl Basadre in 2015. He followed that up with an eighth round technical knockout win over Basadre later that year. Demecillo also owns an upset win over previously unbeaten Vyacheslav Mirzaev in 2018 in Russia.

Nakajima, on the other hand, is on a three-fight winning streak. He defeated the likes of former world title challenger Karoon Jarupianlerd, Chaiwat Buatkrathok and Shohei Kawashina.

Nakajima is a former Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) bantamweight titleholder after defeating Kai Chiba by unanimous decision last year. He immediately lost his belt with a third round technical knockout loss to Keita Kurihara.

Demecillo, who now trains out of the Sanman Gym in General Santos City, is 16-5-2 with 10 knockouts, while Nakajima is 13-1-1 with 11 knockouts.
