DIOMEL Diocos and Jelbirt Gomera are in for a tough assignment as they take on South Africans in South Africa.Diocos will lock horns with former world champion Moruti Mthalane on Oct. 2 at the PMB City Hall in Pietermaritzburg.Diocos is coming as a huge underdog against an accomplished veteran in Mthalane.However, the 29-year-old Diocos has faced a few of the best in his division in the past. He fought but lost to the likes of Roman Gonzalez and Daigo Higa. He’s coming off a unanimous decision win over Ruben Traza.The 39-year-old Mthalane had two reigns as International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight champion.Mthalane won the IBF flyweight belt with a unanimous decision over Julio Cesar Miranda in 2009. He was stripped of the belt in 2014, after four title defenses, because he failed to reach an agreement with mandatory challenger Amnat Ruenroeng. His second reign was in 2018 after defeating Muhammad Waseem by unanimous decision. Following three title defenses, Mthalane lost his IBF belt by unanimous decision to Sunny Edwards last year.Diocos is 15-7-3 with four knockouts, while Mthalane is 39-3 with 26 knockouts.On the other hand, Gomera will square off with Lerato Dlamini on Sept. 30 at the Pacofs in Bloemfontein.Gomera is eager to bounce back after losing to Thattana Luangphon last March via a second-round knockout. He hasn’t won a fight since losing to former world champion Ryan Burnnett in 2019.After losing to Michael Mokoena in his pro debut, Dlamini is riding a 17-fight winning streak. His last contest was a third-round stoppage win over Toto Helebe in July.Gomera is 14-7-2 with seven knockouts, while Dlamini is 17-1 with nine knockouts.
