DIY: Fourth of July

JULY 4 is when Americans commemorate the declaration of their independence in 1776. The national day of the U.S. is often associated with parades, barbecues, fairs and fireworks, among others.

Even non-Americans love to partake in Fourth of July festivities, and Filipinos are no exception. To celebrate safely and responsibly, one can host at home with some of these food staples:

Barbecue ribs

Where: Golden Peak Hotel and Suites

(@goldenpeakhotelcebu)

Moist and fall-off-the-bone tender, Golden Peak’s slab of ribs which you can order in half or full, is seasoned with salt and pepper, and generously basted with its house-made sweet and smoky barbecue sauce before, during and after being slow-cooked. Each order comes with roasted vegetables.

Hot dogs

Where: Luncheonette (@LuncheonetteCebu)

You can hardly go wrong with something as simple and classic as a hot dog, and even serving it plain in a bun will please your guests, both kids and kids at heart. Luncheonette is taking it up a few notches with its plump and juicy dogs, and with all kinds of fixins you can imagine — from pickle relish and cole slaw to chili, cheese and salsa, just to mention a few.

S’mores

Where: Metro Supermarket

Wow guests even more by arranging and serving your own “S’mores-gasboard.” It doesn’t have to be all marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate bars. You can throw in some pretzels, fresh fruits and even nuts for more variety in flavor and texture too. Don’t forget the skewers! All items are conveniently available in Metro supermarkets.

Apple pie

Where: Whisk Sanson (@WhiskSanson)

This version has apple slices that still have a bite to them and have just the right amount of cinnamon so the flavors all meld well. The crust is flaky and tender but doesn’t fall apart when you cut into it. It comes with crust art too, from the traditional lattice to the more intricate milkmaid braids, spoke rose, rope twist and even a “banig” weave.

Red, white and blue dessert buffet

Where: Pink Heaven

Assorted desserts are your best bet when inviting guests who want different things. Start with cake pops, cupcakes and square-cut cakes in the American flag colors. You can choose from Pink Heaven’s standard offerings, or you can have the store customize some desserts or your entire sweets spread for you. Don’t miss out on the red velvet cake with its signature cream cheese frosting.
