Elite teams to compete in Palaro Boxing

EIGHT elite teams from Visayas and Mindanao will be competing in 10 different divisions of the Palarong Pambansa Boxing Vismin Cup at the Cebu City Sports Center on July 12-15.The tournament is comprised of a total of 80 boxers from Cebu City, Cebu Province, Cebu North, Davao Region, Cagayan de Oro City, Negros Occidental, Iloilo City and Ormoc City. The amatuer pugs will be competing in two age classifications—Junior Boys (15 to 16 years old) and Youth Boys (17 to 18 years old)—with four weight divisions per age group.“This will be a very exciting and action-packed tournament. There will be eight teams composed of elite fighters. It will be full of action but the safety of the fighters will be there,” said Tournament Director Ludy Ceriales, the first and only Filipina International Boxing Association three star judge and referee. It has been years since Cebu City has hosted an amateur boxing tournament of this magnitude. Ceriales, along with Cebu City Sports Commission chief John Pages, assured that the tournament will be smooth-sailing and will follow strict Covid-19 health and safety protocols.“We have required everybody to be eligible and fit. Right now, Covid-19 in Cebu has eased up and it won’t be a bubble anymore. But we are not taking any chances and I have given instructions to our officials to use masks and maintain physical distancing,” said Ceriales.Aside from the boxing tournament, Ceriales will also be hosting a national boxing refresher course, wherein she’ll be discussing the developments and new rules in amateur boxing, on July 10 and 11.The course will have a total of 150 to 200 participants.Online registration for the refresher course starts June 23, which can be found at the Cebu City Sports Commission’s Facebook page.
