Explore all potential energy sources, not just nuclear, national govt urged

SENATOR Maria Lourdes “Nancy” Binay wants the national government to explore all potential sources of energy to determine what is fit for the country. This was what Binay had to say after President Rodrigo Duterte assigned the Nuclear Energy Program Inter-Agency Committee to conduct further studies on the possible use or revival of the $2.2 billion Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP), which was completed in 1985 but mothballed a year later. As the chairperson of the Committee on Science and Technology, Binay said the use of nuclear energy as a source of power is something that they should explore, citing other countries that have already adapted to innovations by using small barges.“Hindi na ganun. Hindi na katulad nung Bataan Power Plant. May innovation na malilit na barges na lang e. Hindi na malaking structures, but that we should explore all potential sources of energy,” she said.(There is no need to stay in the past. We can’t follow the same model as that of the Bataan Power Plant. There are now innovations in which small barges can provide power. We should explore all potential sources of energy)“And then pag nandyan na ‘yan, pag alam na natin kung anong pwedeng pagpilian, dun tayo mamili kung anong nararapat sa atin,” Binay added. The Philippine Nuclear Research Institute revealed that South Korea is offering to rehabilitate the abandoned Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) at a cost of $ 1billion.The offer of South Korea comes after Duterte issued Executive Order 164 establishing a nuclear energy program to expand the country’s power sources. But Binay said she received reports that residents in Bataan do not support the revival or operation of the nuclear power plant.“Unang-una, napaka-importante na kumuha muna ng approval from the LGU (local government units) at saka dun sa probinsya, that’s the first step,” she explained.
