Female fighters showcased in Independence Day Boxing show

SOME of the country’s best female fighters were featured in exhibition bouts in Noy Pacing Flores (NPF) Boxing Gym and VSG Promotions’ Independence Day Boxing amateur show at the NPF Boxing Gym in Mandaue City, Cebu.World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver atomweight champion Norj Guro; former world champions Marnelle Verano and Kim Actub; former world title contender Carleans Rivas; and unbeaten prospect Wenie Verano.In the exhibition matches, Rivas took on Wenie, Marnelle faced Actub and Guro took on amateur prospect Isahbel Verano.Former Palarong Pambansa gold medalist Pathricia Mae Sumalinog of the NPF Boxing Gym also had an exhibition bout with fellow amateur Kim Verano.The VSG Women fighters are in Cebu training under the guidance of renowned coach Brix Flores at the NPF Boxing Gym.Guro is coming off a huge split decision win over Denise Castle in Dubai last March. She’s currently ranked No. 2 in the WBC Female atomweight division, behind Maria Soledad Vargas. Fabiana Bytyqi is the current WBC Female atomweight champion. She has a record of 12-7-1 with four knockouts.Rivas is looking to bounce back after failing her bid for a world title back in 2020. She lost to International Boxing Federation (IBF) Female minimumweight champion Yokasta Valle. She’s 8-7-4.Meanwhile, Marnelle is looking to make her ring return in boxing after quitting her day job as a phlebotomist at the Adventist Hospital Palawan. She hasn’t fought in boxing since winning the Women’s International Boxing Association super flyweight title with a unanimous decision over Sylvia Scharper in 2015. She tried out a new sport, kickboxing, with her cousin Wenie. Marnelle is 6-2-1 with two knockouts.Wenie is a young rising prospect who is unbeaten and has heavy hands. She’s 9-0 with seven knockouts.Actub, in the meantime, is a former World Boxing Association super bantamweight champion. She is an experienced fighter and is coming off a unanimous decision over Marichu Semillano. Actub is 8-10-1 with five knockouts.VSG Promotions’ Gary Connolly wants to give his female fighters the much needed training, experience and exposure thus sending his boxers to Cebu.In the meantime, Tipolo Boxers topped the Independence Day Boxing show with three victories, while Villamor Boxing Gym (VBG) also walked away with two wins.Tipolo’s Jobert Dacullo forced VBG’s James Concepcion to quit on his stool after one round, Tipolo’s Sherwin Dacullo beat VBG’s Rosario Cutanda by unanimous decision and Tipolo’s Noel Semblante scored a first round technical knockout of VBG’s Kirby Hoybia.VBG’s Vicente Unidos beat Alang-Alang’s Francis Arante by unanimous decision, while VBG’s Emman Concepcion defeated Tipolo’s John Eronico via split decision.In other fights, Jerson Inon beat Zandro Ypil by unanimous decision, Adrian Giyangan walked away with a unanimous decision over James Blanco, Fredrich Locsin won against Carl Simbajon by unanimous decision and James Boncales beat Nicolas Pableo by unanimous decision.
