First fight overseas, Sarcon challenges Kang for WBA belt

IT’LL be a couple of firsts for unbeaten prospect Lienard Sarcon as he trades leathers with Jong Seon Kang for the World Boxing Association (WBA) Asia featherweight belt on Sept. 4, 2022 at the Tech University of Korea in Siheung City, South Korea.Sarcon, 22, will be fighting his first regional title fight against his first foreign opponent in his first fight overseas.Sarcon, who started fighting in the pro ranks in 2017, had an impressive performance in Gerry Peñalosa’s Ultimate Boxing Series Bantamweight Tournament in 2019. He stopped Cebuano Rimon Rama in the fourth round of the quarterfinals, beat Gary Tamayo by split decision and won against Aljum Pelesio by majority decision in the finals.After a hiatus in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Sarcon returned in 2021 with a third round stoppage of Mark Glen Antaran in Gen. Santos City. He followed that up with a first round stoppage win over Ian Ligutan last Feb. 6 in Digos City.The 20-year-old Kang is unbeaten in 17 fights. He won the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Youth Intercontinental super featherweight belt with a fifth round stoppage of Qixiu Zhang in 2019 in China. He captured the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Oriental Youth featherweight strap with a split decision victory over fellow Filipino Tomjune Mangubat in 2019 in Vietnam. Two years later, he beat Nam Jun Lee by unanimous decision to win the WBO Oriental featherweight belt last year.Kang is coming off a 10th round stoppage of Urmat Amankulov last Feb. 19 in South Korea.Sarcon is 9-0 with four knockouts, while Kang is 15-0-2 with eight knockouts.
