A historian, medical doctors, and a traditional healer will look deeper into food as an instrument of resistance, healing and pleasure in the precolonial Visayas during a blended forum with cooking demonstration.
In the victory at Mactan 500 years ago, poisoned arrows were among the natives’ weapons; while in 1565, food deprivation was used to resist Spanish occupation.
Aphrodisiacs as part of the natives’ healing diet will also be tackled in “Lami ug Palami… Aphrodisiacs, Poisons, and Healing in Precolonial Visayas 500 years ago”, on February 28, 2021, 3pm, at Palm Grass The Cebu Heritage Hotel.
Dr. Rolando Borrinaga, a Visayas historian and professor of the University of the Philippines (UP), will talk about the diet of Visayan natives in precolonial times.
Dr. Romeo Quijano, an herbalist/pharmacologist/toxicologist and former professor of the UP College of Medicine, will tackle medicinal and poisonous herbs used since precolonial times.
Dr. Oliver Gimenez, President of the Association of Municipal Health Officers of the Philippines – Cebu Province will discuss whether Cebu communities still practice traditional healing and if the people have access to nutritious diet.
A traditional healer (tambalan) from Naga City, Cebu will discuss traditional healing methods used centuries ago until today.
Palm Grass’ Kapihan ni Lumaya Chef Janilyn will also present Cebuano favorite healthy food dishes.
The event is co-sponsored by the Department of Education Region 7, Department of Health – National Nutrition Council, Local Government Unit of Naga City, Diyandi Heritage Center, Museo Sugbo, and the Central Visayas Association of Museums.
