THE 2,000 square meters of Cebu City’s historic Freedom Park will not be affected by the Carbon Public Market’s redevelopment.
On Tuesday, November 9, 2021, Market Administrator Irvin Cabales said this was made possible after Acting Mayor Michael Rama made the suggestion to preserve a part of the park where political gatherings, rallies, demonstrations and debates are allowed without the need to apply for a government permit.
The park nowadays, however, is a center for trade. It is located inside the Carbon market complex.
On November 28, more than 700 vendors selling their wares in Warwick Barracks and in the portion of Freedom Park will move to the interim market in Carbon market’s Unit 2. But the vendors of flowers, native products and furniture will remain in the 2,000 square meters that will undergo a makeover through the City’s efforts.
The vendors’ stalls on the Freedom Park side will still be repaired by Cebu2World Development Inc., a Megawide Construction Corp.’s wholly owned subsidiary that is undertaking the modernization of Carbon Public Market.
Cabales said when the stall holders move to the interim market, their monthly rental will be reduced from the average of P1,700 per month to P1,200. (PAC, CAL)
