‘Fun bicycle ride’ kicks off Earth Hour in Mandaue

OVER 200 cyclists participated in the Cycling for Climate Change in Mandaue City at 7:30 p.m on Saturday, March 27, 2021.

Edwin Anthony Jumao-as, executive director of the Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue (Team), said the activity was part of the celebration of Earth Hour, which promotes energy conservation.

Jumao-as said that they did not encounter any problems during the event.

He said the cyclists did not cause traffic because they occupied bike lanes that are separated from the road by plastic bollards.

He also deployed traffic enforcers to assist participants.

Since most of the lights were off at the start of the activity, Jumao-as said each biker brought a light, which was attached to his or her bike or head gear.

Jumao-as said the activity was for fun and not a race.

He said most of the participants were from bikers’ organizations in the cities of Mandaue, Cebu, Lapu-Lapu and Talisay.

Twenty Team traffic enforcers also joined the activity, Jumao-as said.

The cyclists started and ended at Parkmall.

Jumao-as said the activity lasted for an hour after which the City Government initiated the turning off of non-essential lights for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., “as a symbol of commitment to the planet.”

Residents who knew about the event also took part and turned off all non-essential lights. (KFD)
