‘Green corridor park’ helps preserve Mahiga Creek

A P5.5-MILLION park project aimed to protect and preserve the Mahiga Creek is beginning to attract more people two months after it was opened to the public .

The Green Corridor Park, located along the Mahiga Creek connecting Ouano Avenue and M. Logarta Street in Barangay Subangdaku, was inspected by local officials on Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2021.

The park was constructed starting November 2020 and was completed in June 2021.

Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes told reporters that before they initiated the project, informal settlers were building their shanties along the Mahiga Creek’s three-meter easement.

Cortes said the creek was often prone to overflow during heavy rains with incidents of children drowning.

As a way to prevent more deaths, Cortes said they have negotiated with the informal settlers to pull out from the area in exchange for cash assistance and relocation.

With the completion of the Green Corridor Park now completed, Cortes said the public can enjoy the river’s scenery by relaxing at the benches they placed there or they can exercise there.

Cyclists can even take their bikes at the park, which has bike ramps.
