Guro returns with a bang after 4-year ring hiatus

NORJ Guro proved that she’s a world championship-caliber after claiming the World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver Female atomweight title with a unanimous decision over WBC No. 9 ranked Denise Castle on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at the Habtoor Grand Hotel in Dubai, UAE.Guro outclassed Castle and won in all three of the judges’ scorecards, 77-76, 77-75 and 78-74.“She got a little bit tired because of how short our preparation was for this fight. But you can clearly see that she has the attitude and heart of a champion that really doesn’t want to lose. Even though she was tired, she still had the courage to trade blows. She’s also an intelligent boxer. She’s very strategic in her fights,” Guro’s coach, Brix Flores, told SunStar Cebu. With the win, Guro should break into the WBC Female atomweight world rankings, wherein Czech Fabiana Bytyqi is the current WBC Female atomweight champion.“If she continues to train hard, she’s very hard to beat,” said Flores. “She’s ready for a world championship if she’ll have a good training camp.”Guro improved to 12-7-1 with four knockouts, while Castle dropped to 3-3 with three knockouts. On the other hand, Miel Fajardo (8-1-2, 7 KOs) scored a huge upset with a second-round stoppage of world-ranked Agustin Gauto (17-1, 12 KOs) at the Duty Free Tennis Stadium also in Dubai.Fajardo dropped the previously unbeaten Gauto in the opening round with a left hook. He knocked him down two more times with that same left hook in the second round. Gauto survived the third knockdown but Fajardo unleashed another left hook to the head that wobbled the 24-year-old Argentinean prospect, forcing the referee to step in and stop the fight.Gauto came into this fight as a huge favorite being ranked No. 5 by the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and No. 7 by the World Boxing Association (WBA).
