Guv: Fight vs drugs not just for photo ops

CEBU Governor Gwendolyn Garcia wants the members of the One Cebu Inter-Agency Interdiction Task Force (OC-IAITF) to take their efforts to fight against illegal drugs seriously and not for photograph opportunities (photo ops) only.

During the meeting that Garcia presided over on February 9 with the OC-IAITF members, they discussed additional measures that can be taken by various agencies to combat illegal drugs, such as the arrest of illegals and the penalties that will be imposed on them.

Capitol’s social media arm Sugbo News announced that the meeting was attended by representatives from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, Philippine National Police, Bureau of Immigration, National Bureau of Investigation, Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority, and the Department of Foreign Affairs.

To recall on February 1, a South African national who was carrying 17 kilograms of substance believed to be shabu was intercepted at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport.

Garcia again emphasized the need for heightened security at the borders, ports, and airports to prevent the entry of contraband.

She added that the steps to be taken should not be just for photo ops with their captives in order to make a nice report.

The OC-IAITF was initiated by the governor to limit if not completely prevent the entry of illegal drugs in Cebu through the cooperation of government agencies. (ANV/TPT)
