It’s all about the Chase

Last October, entrepreneur Chase Cokaliong posted a photo of a 1.2 carat diamond ring with the caption, “Double tap if you want this, and I might do something crazy.”Days after posting that, Chase shared another photo announcing that he is giving away the shining shimmering ring for free to a lucky winner. And this surprising giveaway broke the internet. After the success of the grand giveaway, it was followed by another big giveaway, then another, and another, until it became a thing. There was a car, groceries, a 3.7 carat tennis bracelet, power backup units, a PS5, a 70-inch television, one-year supply of fruit and an all-expense paid dinner.Netizens kept chasing Chase’s extravagant giveaways, and named the entrepreneur, “Cebu’s giveaway king.”Who is Chase Cokaliong and why is he doing this anyway?Chase is the son of Chester Cokaliong, founder of Cokaliong Shipping Lines and the eldest of his generation in the family.Chase is not the typical child-of-the-owner who was handed everything to be where he is today. As young as 10 years old, he was trained to be in the business by going with his dad at the pier every Saturday.“I think I was brainwashed when I was young. It was instilled in me that the company is my responsibility,” he said. The very day after his college graduation from Ateneo de Manila University, instead of going on a trip to treat himself, Chase went straight to the office for his first day as a special assistant to the CEO or as what Chase described, “sort of a glorified secretary.”Three years later, he was appointed as the company’s HR manager on top of being a special assistant. After two years of juggling his jobs as a special assistant and HR manager, he landed the role of vice president and still the HR manager. Like everyone else, Chase had to climb the corporate ladder, the only difference is the more he’s on top of the ladder, the more role he gets. In addition to that, he handled operations, purchasing while also running his own businesses including CrossFit Subtero, StorageTown and Bayfront Hotel. No matter how hectic schedule Chase has, as a multi-hyphenate in his family’s business, he still takes the time out to venture out with his own businesses: “I know what my dad built here. I know that no matter how successful this company becomes, it will always be Chester Cokaliong’s company. On my part, I want to do my own things, I want to build something for myself, and create a legacy that I will be known for as myself as well,” he shared.Chase indeed mastered the art of time management because aside from being a businessman, he is a loving father to two adorable children: two-year-old Cali and newborn Cade, and a good husband to his wife Tritzie who Chase described as very understanding. “I would not have married her if she wasn’t,” he said. For him, his family is the most important thing in life. “I want to be present to my kids’ lives so when the time comes, I want them to remember that I am always there for them. And, when they are old enough, I want them to know that they can talk to me about anything so I can guide properly and present to them the pros and cons of whatever things they want to do.”When asked if he still has time to have fun, he candidly answered, “I like to spend my time efficiently. I have a close-knit group of friends, and these people are the people who I do business with. You can’t do business with people you don’t trust, same with you can’t be friends with people you don’t trust. So, whenever we are together, it’s like hitting two birds with one stone: We eat, we drink while doing business.”Of all the things he has achieved, Chase—who admitted that he didn’t have the “when-I-grow-up-I-want-to-be-a-(insert profession here)” thing—just wants to be remembered as a good father, and someone who is successful in the business who is not only able to provide for his family but also to other people.“The reason why I want to make money, and be successful in business is for me to provide for my family’s needs as well as help other people especially those in need,” he said. That’s how the extraordinary giveaways started. Chase, who was bored during the pandemic lockdown, wanted to do a social experiment.“I want to help people in a fun way,” he explained. As someone who is into diamonds, for his first Instagram raffle, he decided to give away this 1.2-carat diamond ring which was just sitting in his vault. From then on, his followers vaulted up to 35,000 from 4,000.“It was beyond my target of 10,000 followers.” To date, the instant social media influencer has 124,000 followers.Chase said that apart from helping in a fun way, his goal is to promote his businesses, as well as support other local businesses. And, whatever money comes in from his brand partnerships, it goes out for another purpose that others would benefit.“Like for example, the PS5 giveaway, the money I used to buy it was from a brand partnership,” he shared.Chase, who loves to surround himself with successful people who carry a lot of insights and experience he can learn from, added: “If you are the smartest one in the room, you are in the wrong room. Always remember that no matter where you are in life, there is always someone better than you and someone is looking up to you.”
