Lapu-Lapu City seeks new cemetery

LAPU-LAPU City Mayor Junard Chan has urged the priests of the Nuestra Señora De Regla Parish National Shrine to present to the city government possible lots that can be developed into a cemetery.

This, after the allegedly rising death toll in the city in the last few weeks resulted in the Humay-Humay Cemetery in Brgy. Gun-ob running out of burial plots.

The parish wanted the Municipal Cemetery in Brgy. Gun-ob reopened after Chan ordered its closure in 2020 due to its supposed failure to follow cemetery standards.

However, Chan said it is not possible as the cemetery is undergoing rehabilitation.

Chan suggested that in the meantime, the dead can be buried in another cemetery which is on Olango island.

“It’s a short trip going there so we can do that while the public cemetery is still under construction. Once there are burial plots, we can allow more bodies to be buried there,” said Chan.

He also revealed that the parish has mentioned to him a vacant lot in barangays Babag and Basak but they have yet to inspect it if it can be transformed into a cemetery.

One of the things to consider is if it won’t create heavy traffic in the area. (GCM / CCP)
