Lawmaker seeks inclusion of entrepreneurship in curriculum of junior, senior high school

A CEBU City lawmaker has proposed the inclusion of entrepreneurship as a separate subject in the curriculum of junior and senior high school under the K-12 program.

Believing that education is a tool for empowerment, Rep. Eduardo “Edu” Rama Jr. (south district) recently filed House Bill 6880, which seeks to hone the ability of Filipino youth to take calculated risks, organize and manage a business in a competitive market that is constantly evolving.

The congressman said students will be exposed to concepts and exercises that will challenge them to develop their entrepreneurial skills.

The bill also seeks to provide a complete, adequate and integrated system of education to both private and public school students, making such a system of education relevant and attuned to the current needs of Filipinos.

“Entrepreneurship is a key driver of a country’s economy. The world is changing rapidly and we are moving steadily towards a generation equipped with more technical knowledge,” Rama said in the explanatory note. “Entrepreneurship is a significant career option among the current generation as it significantly contributes to economic growth and generates numerous jobs.”

The bill mandates that the education secretary shall appoint a head subject specialist who will lead the implementation of the proposed separate subject.

Proposed entrepreneurial subject matters include leadership and management, fund sourcing, marketing, business strategy and contemporary entrepreneurial practices. (PR)
