Mark Magsayo takes on Figueroa for interim WBC belt

MARK Magsayo faces fellow former world champion Brandon Figueroa for the interim World Boxing Council (WBC) featherweight belt on March 4 at the Toyota Arena in Ontario, California.

The 27-year-old Magsayo is eager to return after suffering his first career defeat last year. Magsayo lost his WBC featherweight belt to veteran Rey Vargas by split decision on July 9, 2022. He dropped Vargas in the ninth round but it wasn’t enough as he only got the nod of one of the three judges with scores of 114-113, 112-115 and 112-115.

Magsayo became a world champion after dethroning longtime titleholder Gary Russell Jr. by majority decision in a huge upset on Jan. 22, 2022.

The 26-year-old Figueroa just moved up to featherweight after a two-year reign as world champion in the super bantamweight division. Figueroa won the interim World Boxing Association (WBA) super bantamweight belt with an eighth round stoppage of Yonfrez Parejo in 2019. He was later on elevated as the regular champion and unified the WBA and WBC super bantamweight belts with a seventh round knockout of Mexican star Luis Nery in 2021. Figueroa then suffered his first career defeat and lost both of his belts to Stephen Fulton via majority decision later that year.

Figueroa returned as a featherweight in 2022 and stopped Carlos Castro in six rounds.

Magsayo is 24-1 with 16 knockouts, while Figueroa is 23-1-1 with 18 knockouts.

The Showtime Championship Boxing event also features two other exciting bouts to complete the triple-header.

Former unified world champion Jarret Hurd (24-2, 16 KOs) faces off with Mexican prospect Jose Armando Resendiz (13-1, 9 KOs), while unbeaten middleweight up-and-comers Amilcar Vidal (16-0, 12 KOs) and Elijah Lorenzo Garcia (13-0, 11 KOs) in the third featured bout. (EKA)
