MCWD major pipe erupts, no water in some areas

AROUND 1,000 households were affected when a major water pipe in Barangay Kamputhaw, Cebu City erupted due to strong water pressure at dawn on Thursday, May 11, 2023.

According to Minerva Gerodias, spokesperson of the Metropolitan Cebu Water District (MCWD), a portion of Barangay Kamputhaw along North Escario St. has been completely isolated from receiving water supply.

She added that adjacent areas such as Busay, Nivel Hills, Salinas Drive, and the rest of North Escario St. may also experience low water pressure to no water supply.

“As for the others, their pressure is not stable right now, because we are not going to directly release the supply [with the ongoing repair works),” she said in Cebuano.

In a separate statement on Thursday, MCWD promised to “diligently complete the repairs within the day in order to restore water service to affected areas.”

Damaged houses

Gerodias said investigation by MCWD is still underway to determine if there are houses damaged by the incident that happened at 3:39 a.m. Thursday, after the water district increased the water supply in Barangay Kamputhaw from the Lusaran bulk water project.

She said the waterline in Kamputhaw was not used to high pressure since water supply in the area has been inadequate for years.

Gerodias assured that just compensation and assistance will be given to those whose houses may have been damaged.

“MCWD has a policy that in those instances we will have our legal team assess the extent of the damage caused by this leak,” she said.
