MCWD renews contract with septage firm to collect waste in Mactan Island

THE Metropolitan Cebu Water District on Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2023, entered into a P49.1-million contract with a private firm for the implementation of a septage management treatment program for the entire Mactan Island.

Officials of MCWD led by general manager Edgar Donoso formally signed a contract with Envirokonsult Equipment and Services Inc. (EESI) before Cordova Mayor Cesar “Didoy” Suan on Jan. 4 at the town hall, the water service provider said in a press statement.

Based on its contract with MCWD, EESI is committed to collect and treat at least 30 cubic meters of sludge daily from MCWD consumers within Mactan Island but this is expected to increase as MCWD’s number of service connections grows.

EESI’s plant, located in Barangay San Miguel in Cordova, has the capacity to store and process up to 150 cubic meters of sludge a day.

Aside from those living in Cordova, EESI can cater to non-MCWD consumers provided that they are located in Mactan Island.

Cost for the desludging and treatment of wastes will be paid by MCWD consumers in installments, while non-MCWD consumers have to pay one time at the water district main office.

In June 2015, MCWD and EESI signed a contract for the putting up of the septage treatment facility on MCWD’s lot in Cordova.

The following year, EESI started collecting waste and operating the treatment plant. In August 2021, the contract ended but it was extended until August 2022.

After the one year extension, MCWD conducted a bidding for desludging and septage treatment services for Lapu-Lapu City and Cordova. Only EESI responded to the invitation to bid.

As per their agreement, EESI will provide vacuum trucks and equipment that passed the standards of the Department of Health, as well as trained personnel who will do the desludging of septic tanks.

EESI, a Manila-based company, has a track record of providing desludging services to major water utilities.

The putting up of septage management facilities is a provision of Republic Act 9275, or the Clean Water Act of 2004. (JKV)
