Most Cebu City barangays remain Covid-free despite massive rallies

MORE barangays in Cebu City remain free of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases despite the series of mass gatherings that were held in the city the past few days.Emergency Operations Center (EOC) deputy chief implementer Councilor Joel Garganera said on Friday, April 22, 2022, that 64 barangays had recorded zero transmission of Covid-19 cases. This means that only 16 barangays in the city have recorded active Covid-19 cases as of Thursday, April 21.“This is an indication that our Covid cases are very low, but it’s an indication nga naa pa gyuy Covid so dili ta ka afford mag complacent. Comply gihapon ta sa protocol (that Covid is still very much around so let’s continue to comply with the protocols),” said Garganera.Of 757 individuals who were tested, only four persons tested positive for Covid-19.This would translate to a 0.53 percent positivity rate for that day, said Garganera.Last April 18, thousands of people attended the Marcos-Duterte grand rally at the South Road Properties.According to Garganera, the gathering could have been a “super spreader” event, but with most people wearing masks and considering that the venue was an open area, the risk of contamination was mitigated. On Thursday, April 21, the Leni-Kiko tandem also held a grand rally at the North Reclamation Area in Mandaue City where thousands also gathered to attend. The World Health Organization has warned of a possible surge in cases due to election activities and the easing of restrictions. As of April 22, the Cebu City Health Department vaccinated a total of 842,643 of the 1,129,522 registered adults in the city’s Covid-19 vaccination program. As for booster shots, 125,772 shots have been administered out of the 150,935 individuals who registered. The health department was also able to give the second dose to 57,340 young individuals out of the 94,711 registered children from ages 12 to 17 years old.A total of 10,791 out of the 26,497 registered children ages five to 11 years old have also completed the second dose of the vaccine.
