Only 7 new Covid cases in Cebu City, a 3rd-wave low

THE Cebu City Emergency Operations Center (EOC) recorded only seven new Covid-19 cases on Monday, Oct. 18, 2021, the lowest since the third wave began around May.

Only seven persons tested positive for the coronavirus out of the 496 people swabbed in the past few days, registering a 3.8 percent positivity rate, according to City Councilor Joel Garganera, deputy chief implementer of the EOC.

The City had only 344 active cases in the past 10 days, and 27 out of 80 barangays had no reported transmission of Covid-19 in the same period.

Garganera said the number of swabbed persons decreased because the number of infected residents had also decreased, which resulted in fewer close contacts.

With the decline in the number of infected individuals, Cebu City’s critical care utilization rate also dropped to only 29.8 percent as there were only 195 patients who remained in 15 private and public hospitals. About 60 percent of the patients live outside Cebu City.

Despite the decrease in Cebu City’s active cases, Garganera still asked the public not to be complacent as there are upcoming social events that will attract crowds.

These are the observance of the “Kalag-kalag” (All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day on Nov. 1 and 2), Christmas Day on Dec. 25, New Year’s Eve on Dec. 31, New Year’s Day, Sinulog on the third Sunday of January 2022 and the May 2022 elections. (PAC)
