Over 200 vendors transfer to interim market in Carbon

MORE than 200 of the 700 stall owners in Warwick Barracks and Freedom Park in the Carbon Public Market complex have transferred to the interim market.Market Administrator Raquel Arce said those vendors who transferred to the interim market have the privilege to choose their new stalls.Arce said the interim market stalls allocated for vendors who had refused to transfer will be given to others. The old stalls in Warwick Barracks and Freedom Park will be demolished, she said. The vendors were given until Friday, March 18, 2022 to leave Freedom Park and Warwick Barracks. However, several Carbon market vendors have reiterated that they will not transfer and will wait for the next session of the Cebu City Council on Wednesday, March 23. They insisted the joint venture agreement entered into by the City Government and Megawide Corp. for the redevelopment of Carbon Market had loopholes.Meanwhile, Mayor Michael Rama said Monday, March 21, he will no longer talk with vendors who continue to oppose the modernization of the Carbon Market. The redevelopment of the centuries-old market will push through based on the JVA, he said.On Monday, tensions flared up when members of the Cebu City Prevention, Restoration, Order, Beautification and Enhancement (Probe) team placed railings along M.L. Quezon St. near the stalls of vendors in the “bagsakan,” an area where merchandise are delivered. Rama defended the move, saying he had done it before to free up the street from any obstruction.
